Palm Pre Plus Phone Review
23 Jul
The Palm Pre was the big hit of January 2009. It is not May 2010, which is a testament to this award winning smartphone design of look. But when AT & T smartphone, which is against pre iPhones past and future, and Palm’s smartphone cut seasoned yet not quite, especially at a much higher up-front price than Verizon’s version of the same phone.
If you are totally unfamiliar with Palm webOS phones are, then the pre attractive small oval with a sliding touch screen, a full keyboard, but small, and an easy-to-use, multitasking operating system. Palm’s “Synergy” function pulls contacts from Facebook, LinkedIn and Google, although there do not integrate Facebook messaging, as some Motorola and HTC phones.
Calls for the Pre-Plus sound great, the person with the Pre Plus. Sound through the earpiece was unusually rich and well-rounded, listening with just the right volume in almost any situation. The same goes for the speakerphone. But the phone’s microphone is a noise magnet, and sometimes background noise can overwhelm even the Pre-Plus User’s voice on the other side of a call. As on all Palm webOS phones, there is no language, but the phone works with an Aliph Jawbone headset icon in order. Battery life was okay, but not exceptional at 5 hours of talk time.

Unlike the Sprint and Verizon Palm devices, this model can make phone calls and surf the Internet make it the same time, an advantage of AT & T’s GSM network that has Luke Wilson pointed out in many TV commercials.
Reception on AT & T’s 3G network was average, and speeds were good, I have 1100 to 1200 kbps sec download through the browser. YouTube videos, and music streaming, Pandora without stutters or problems. The phone works on AT & T’s 3G network and on 2G EDGE networks overseas, but has 802.11 b/g Wi-Fi.
The AT & T’s Pre-Plus GPS performance was faster and better than the Sprint and Verizon versions. The AT & T Pre Plus comes with AT & T Navigator and Google Maps, both locked in my location quickly and accurately.
The Pre is synchronized with the painful death of the old iTunes feature that Palm decided to give up. The best option is now synchronizing the free Double Twist (Free) program that transcodes files good for the Pre. Once you have your music on your phone, the Pre most plays beautifully formats via cable or Bluetooth headphones. Videos Look Sharp, as long as they are transcoded into the right format, 320-480.

The Pre Plus’s 3-megapixel camera takes photos at an odd resolution (2032-by-1520), but they are razor sharp. You can even over-sharpened for some tastes, but I liked their accuracy (even in low light) compared to the blurring that from most camera phones. The video mode takes 640-clear by 480 videos at 29 frames per second.
The Palm Pre Plus is your best alternative to iPhone from AT & T, but it is a distant second to that dynamic and innovative platform. Apple is just moving faster than palm, with more new features, a new mobile phone model to come, and something like ten times the available applications.

This is a 2009 phone, and it is not 2009 any more. Palm is about to change into a huge, radical, and probably a positive way. And AT & T is not to help push the Pre forward by charging $ 100 more than Verizon Wireless has and removal of the Wi-Fi hotspot software.
So there you have it. If you are interested in AT & T, you’re an iPhone. If you are fascinated by the Pre, you use the Verizon version, with free hotspot access. The AT & T pre is a good phone, but it has failed on all sides.
