Motorola MOTOROKR E8 Review

Sporting a touch-sensitive, “morphing” keypad and a sleek, glossy design, Motorola MOTOROKR E8 is far from the first ROKR handset, the boring and ultimately disappointing. The stylish music-oriented handset boasts a “wow factor alone, and although not his morphing controls are perfectly implemented, there are many positive things.

There is no denying the attractiveness E8. It has a glossy black surface on the front, a dark silver finish on the back and is crowned with a stylish dark chrome edges. Although not the most compact handset we’ve seen is the new ROKR thin enough to largely unnoticed in the pocket of the jeans.

The outstanding feature of the E8 is the touch-sensitive keyboard, which has no conventional buttons. Motorola has introduced a technology it dubs ModeShift, designed to make it easier to switch and access various features of the handset. For example, pressing the music key replaces the keyboard with music controls, while switching to camera mode, camera functions like zoom and video. When the phone is not active, the controls are invisible. Although it is to use a pretty cool feature and makes the handset quite easy, you need to press buttons to activate a company and are completely flat (with the exception of a small bump on each key). Consequently, we have found text messaging a Hit and Miss Affair, though the vibrating tactile feedback when each button is pressed, is a welcome addition.

In addition to a five-way navigation pad, the MOTOROKR E8 also has a FastScroll navigation wheel used for scrolling through music, contacts, calendars and multimedia tasks. The wheel is strangely only three-quarters of a circle, in contrast to most scroll wheels that allow full movement of the thumb. Responsiveness and feedback is excellent, although sometimes too fast for your fingers – here there are always too far scrolling when browsing the menu, and there is no way to adjust the scrolling sensitivity.

The MOTOROKR sports a new interface as well. Although it looks very pleasing to the eye, is its flexibility in an easy question: scrolling through menus and lists results in a slight delay. It is huge compared to previous models improved in this respect. Its interface is an improvement over usual Motorola models – horizontal menu items are lined at the bottom of the main menu and the animated icons fly by as you scroll through them. The 2in QVGA display is short and wide and offers reasonable graph.

Since it is a music phone, the E8 comes with 2GB of internal memory standard and also has a microSD card slot that allows cards up to 4 GB are used. The music player itself works pretty well, and 3D stereo, Bass Boost, Repeat and Shuffle modes are also kind to a preset equalizer inclusions. A feature often overlooked on cell phones – a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack – is a welcome addition here, as is the keypad lock switch on the right side of the handset.

The ROKR E8 is a tri-band GSM phone with GPRS and EDGE connectivity, but it lacks 3G or HSDPA connectivity a shame, given Motorola provides access to current chart music ARIA on an over-the-air download link. Bluetooth 2.0 with A2DP, an FM radio and a 2-megapixel camera with 8x digital zoom are other features. The camera is very simple, no flash, autofocus and the ability to set the white balance.
