BlackBerry Pearl 8100 Review
Research In Motion has long wanted to be sold out in the mobile phone market, where consumers are much larger volumes: 75 million mobile phones every quarter in EMEA, compared with about 700,000 e-mail devices. The market research company has said it, the only way to do that is, a device to a camera, a media player and storage device – and that includes small and light.
The result is a device that manages to connect the traditional BlackBerry strength with the joys of a small cell phone, and is expected to combine the best of both worlds. It is widely predicted that RIM – perhaps still stinging from action-induced pain earlier this year – will fade over other devices, but the device is strong argument against this.

It is tempting to dismiss the importance of the small size, but studies show that large units are only for certain types of people – either those who will put up with a big lumpy device to in advance of the technology curve (or earlier in RIM’s life as a fashion statement), or those who forced them to be used by their IT department. I myself have changed my ideas about the size.
In the past, RIM has installed its equipment to return the selected market, for example, limiting the colors in the displays on older models and trimming of all foreign functions, to provide an exemplary battery life and reliability.
The engineers have taken the same approach to the new challenge, size and weight, and again made sensible choices. A BlackBerry that weighs 89g, is 1.4cm thick, 5cm wide and 10.7cm high, is no mean feat, and the device feels good in your hand.

As of this writing we have only a few hours with the Pearl, but our first impression is positive. The 240 x 260 portrait-mode screen is bright and clear (continuing the progress of the BlackBerry 8700 the last model that I personally checked), and good for reading e-mail. It also changes brightness according to ambient light. The unit claims a standby time of 15 days and a talk time of 3.5 hours, which is good to have – although we have not tested this.
If size is important, then RIM should be good with the little pearl – connect to from a first glance – the full BlackBerry experience with a decent mobile phone really, and yet the whole thing and slim enough to attract customers.
