Advances in integrated circuits

Among the most advanced integrated circuits are the microprocessors or “cores” that control everything from computers to cellular phones to digital microwave ovens. Digital memory chips and ASICs are examples of other families of integrated circuits that are important to the modern information society. While the costs for the design and development of a complex integrated circuit is quite high if, as a rule, millions of production units the individual IC costs will be distributed minimized. The performance of ICs is high because the small size allows short traces which in turn, can low-power logic (such as CMOS) to fast switching speeds are used.

These chips are equipped with smaller and smaller dimensions over the years, allowing more circuits to be packed on each chip. This increased capacity per unit area can be used to increase costs and or decrease in the functionality-see Moore’s Law states that in its modern interpretation is that the number of transistors in an integrated circuit doubles every two years. In general, such as shrinking the size function, improves almost everything, the cost per unit and the switching power consumption decrease and increase the speed.

However, ICs with nanometer devices are not without their problems, which include the major leakage (see subliminal leakage for a discussion of this), although these problems are not insurmountable and will likely be solved or at least improved by the introduction of high-k dielectrics. Since these speed and power to make profits for the end user to conquer a tough competition among the manufacturers to use finer geometries. This process, and the expected progress in the coming years is also described by the International Technology Roadmap for Semiconductors (ITRS).
