IEEE Launches Revision to Standard for Rechargeable Cellular Batteries

The IEEE has started on a revision of IEEE Std 1725, approved “Standard for Rechargeable batteries for mobile phones.” The standard covers the quality and reliability of rechargeable lithium-ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries for mobile applications.

“The mobile industry is enormous as IEEE standard was cultivated first time in 1725 approved in 2006, as well as the patterns of people’s mobile phones,” said Jason Howard, leader of the cell phone battery working group to be responsible for updating the standard. “Today’s consumers demand more processing power and better power management of their mobile phones, is it time for us to review and revise standards to ensure that it covers the latest developments in battery technology and industry knowledge.”

In addition to establishing criteria for the design analysis for qualification, quality and reliability of rechargeable lithium ion and lithium-ion polymer batteries, the standard deals with battery electrical and mechanical construction, packaging technologies and packaging and cellular levels and unloading of the controls and overall system considerations.

The revision effort, IEEE P1725 will be in the IEEE Standards Association Corporate Program, in which every participating member unit (for example) companies or other institutions, has developed a voice. This industry-oriented program often allows standards creation in one to two years, depending on participant commitment and use of IEEE support services. The program also offers a path to international acceptance for a standard on a broad band of the IEEE, the international standards community.

The cell-phone battery working group will hold its first meeting on 16-18 February 2010 in Washington, DC. The meeting will serve to review and clarify processes and procedures to appoint the group as well and to choose the group of officers. The existing standard will also be checked at this first meeting, and to specify other dates and locations for future meetings.
