iJewish – Software by Rusty Brick
Even though I am someone who is with many different types of mobile technology every day at work and for various forms of entertainment, I still often forget the way that these devices may be other aspects of our daily life. Take for example the exercise of religion. In recent months, it seems that a record harvest of software that are used can make your own personal religious experience has been released for the iPhone iPod Touch platform, perhaps inspired by the holidays or hard times. I have a sudden spike in applications for the reading of the Scriptures and the observance of public holidays for Catholics, Protestants, Muslims, Buddhists and all other conceivable faith, but I admit much of my attention was on the mobile Judaica.
I am particularly pleased with the software developed by a company called Rusty Brick for the iPhone. They produce versions of the iPhone Siddur (the standard prayer book), the Tefillim (blessing for all cases), Tehillim (Psalms daily) and the entire Tanach (Old Testament) for all major streams of Judaism, such as Ashkenazi and Sephardic, or specialized versions of such sects as Chabad. The text is clear and concise in a very readable Hebrew. The software is not only the texts, but offers a number of very useful tools for the observant and Orthodox Jews. This includes a calendar application, specially designed to observe the Jewish holidays and the Sabbath to facilitate a place sensitive list of specific prayer times, near Minyanim (prayer groups), kosher restaurants and much more. The only drawback of the software is that the prayers and writings are only available in Hebrew, without translation or transcription (with the exception of Tehillim). This is not really a problem for most of its audience, but it would be a nice feature to have. The best feature of all, I feel, what’s Rusty Brick calls Smart Siddur, in which only the prayers that you need to make certain day are displayed. This saves you the trouble to examine the prayers are not said, at certain times of the year or on certain holidays. I always hate reading parts that can be skipped, or vice versa, and this solves that for me, very elegant. Very useful.
